The twilight years we'll
spend as one.
The growing pains have long
since gone.
The moans and groans of
aching bones brings us back
to the promise we made so
many years ago.
We've battled the storms the
ups and downs.
Now it's time for the rocking
chair shuffle.
You bring the blanket and I'll
get the tea.
We'll hold hands and rock
together, knowing our time
was spent in love.

A youth standing tall
Who looks straight ahead
With chin held erect
By his tilted head.

Boldness and sadness
Do show on his face
He mounts the front steps
and takes a new place.

His hands are trembling
He lifts one to knock
His breathing is quick-
The door is unlocked

Passing from childhood
Then over to this place
One great decision
Stares youth in the face.

Turn back? Or press on?
The choice is one's own
Press on? Or turn back?
One chooses alone

A youth standing tall
Who never looked back

Ne'er weary or slack.

The melody won't play
None of this would happen

Fiddle

Black kitten sprung from jail
With your Halloween-colored sister.
An addendum, the keeper of company
for the more colorful one who caught our eye.

Generic black kitten, glowing green eyes
peering out from the pound of fluff.
Rolled around on the ride home
while your tiny spirit reached out.

Fat paws extended in trust
and the tiniest half meow.
Mere minutes elapsed
to feel the secret delight of you.

Slow, you were slow;
we thought you were dropped on your head.
And the belly bloated; many visits to the vet
Different potions to heal your ills.

A year later you're still slow
But your belly has receded.
Fluffy, big but not bursting, black cat
A lovable luxury to behold

So gentle and sweet are you that
Instead of birds and mice and flies
you still hunt leaves and sticks and pebbles.
And lie, trusting, with your belly to the sky.

Oh black cat with the easy heart
Slow, steady and sweet
I say Fiddle Dee I love you!
Out you squeak you half meow.

4th Annual Wine for Words Benefit Event

Help your library buy new books and enjoy a wonderful evening with Todd Borg, author of the Award-Winning Owen McKenna Mystery Thrillers, at our 4th Annual Wine for Words Benefit Event.

The El Dorado County Main Library in Placerville will be hosting the event on Sunday, September 20th from 4 pm to 8 pm.

The evening will begin with wine tasting from four local wineries: Ursa Vineyards, dkcellars, Wofford Acres Vineyards and Oakstone Winery. Each guest will receive a special event wine glass.

At 5 pm a catered gourmet dinner by Diane Wilkinson will be served.

After dinner Mr. Borg will talk about his new book and the other exciting mysteries that he has written. Barnes & Noble will be selling books, or you can bring your own book for the author to sign.

There will also be a raffle for prizes donated by local wineries and merchants. Raffle tickets will be $1 each or $10 for 15 tickets.

Seating is limited, so reserve your table early! Tickets are $50 per person and are available at the El Dorado County Main Library. All proceeds from this event will go toward the purchase of new books for the library.

Here they are:

Nancy O. - Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate - a boy from Africa meets America (Don't judge this book by its cover!)
Janice - Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens - the story of an older woman who retreads the long and rocky pathway of her own life as she raises a young girl left at her door.
Sue - The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond - a young woman walking on the beach in San Francisco with her fiancee's daughter, turns around for a moment and the little girl disappears. In the blink of an eye her life as she knows it is gone. Great treatise on memory.
Misty - Pawprints of Katrina: Pets Saved and Lessons Learned by Cathy Scott - the poignant story of the animals that were rescued during Hurricane Katrina.

"How I See It: My Place" Teen Photography Exhibit

You are cordially invited to the opening of the "How I See It: My Place" Teen Photography Exhibit at the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library.

Who: Local Teen Photographers

What: Photographs taken over the last ten weeks within a 1/4 mile radius of the library

When: Exhibit opens Tuesday, November 18th at 6 pm (with food!)

Where: South Lake Tahoe Branch Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd

Why: To show the community how teens see South Lake Tahoe!

We would love to see you and your friends at the opening night, but if you can't make it, the exhibit will be on display through December 2008. Thanks for supporting our teens, the future leaders of our community!

John Lescroart at Wine for Words

SLT Library awarded grant to enable teens to explore local community through photography & writing

Project is part of statewide program for 21 California libraries

South Lake Tahoe Branch Library has been awarded a grant from the California Council for the Humanities to conduct a 10-week project this fall that will engage 10 to 15 local youth in exploring and investigating their community using digital cameras, direct observation, and resources of the library. The project, How I See It: My Place, is part of a statewide program of the Humanities Council under its California Stories initiative. A culminating exhibit of photographs and writing about the youths’ discoveries will be on view at the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library at the conclusion of the project.

The libraries will use a curriculum specially developed by the Council and Council-donated equipment and materials, including digital cameras, a color printer, and editing software. As part of the project, the youths at each library will curate an exhibit for the community and organize an opening event.

School is back in session and it’s time for homework! Need access to the Internet or word processing? Looking for a quiet place to study? The South Lake Tahoe Branch Library has four computers dedicated to students’ homework needs. These computers have Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point, image editing programs, Internet access, and printing capabilities. Patrons under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian permission to use Internet computers. So grab your parents and get to the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library at 1000 Rufus Allen Boulevard to sign up for a library card and internet permission – before your next project is due!

John Lescroart at Wine for Words

El Dorado County Library Third Annual Wine for Words Event

The El Dorado County Main Library in Placerville will be hosting our Third Annual Wine for Words Event on Sunday, September 28th from 4pm to 8pm. Best selling author John Lescroart will be speaking about his new book “Betrayal”.

The evening will begin at 4pm with wine tasting from five local wineries: Ursa Vineyards, DK Cellars, Madrona Vineyards, Wofford Acres Vineyards and Fenton Herriott Vineyards. Each guest will receive a special event wine glass.

At 5pm a catered dinner by Diane Wilkinson will be served:
· Thai marinated grilled chicken
· Seared ahi with fresh papaya salsa and wasabi dipping sauce
· Spicy Asian noodle salad
· Vegetable pot stickers with dipping sauce
· Greens with rice wine dressing
· Fruit kabobs
· Dessert
· Beverages
· A bottle of local wine will be provided at each table

After dinner Mr. Lescroart will talk about his new book and the other exciting mysteries that he has written. Barnes & Noble will be selling books, or you can bring your own book for the author to sign.

There will also be a raffle for prizes donated by local wineries and merchants. Raffle tickets will be $1 each or $10 for 15 tickets.

Seating is limited, so reserve your table early! Tickets are $50 per person and are available at the El Dorado County Main Library. All proceeds from this event will go toward the purchase of new books for the library.

Libraries are Cool!!

We already know that libraries are cool, but this week the libraries in El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park and Placerville became officially recognized as cooling centers. This means that you can escape the dreadfully hot smoky air by settling down in a comfy chair with a good book – at your library! Our hours in those locations will expand until 9 pm through Friday, but we will have limited services available after our usual closing hours. Please stay cool and come on by, and bring along someone who may not have air conditioning. We're the coolest place in town.

Library Displays

Although our library display cases are often used to publicize important community services and agencies, we sometimes have space for a special exhibit of items from our own library patrons’ personal collections. In the past few months we have displayed baseball gloves, music boxes, Hopi Indian dolls, Lewis and Clark memorabilia, and gourd art. If you have a special collection of objects that you might like to share with others, please call or stop by the library and let us know. Displays are changed monthly at our Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, South Lake Tahoe and Main/Placerville libraries.

Taking a Book Ordering Break

Wondering why the library hasn’t ordered a new book by your favorite author? It may be because it’s that time of year again. Our county fiscal year ends on June 30 and starts with a new budget on July 1. The fiscal employees in all of the departments work extra hard to wrap up the old year and sort out our end-of-year finances. While one year changes into the next, the library needs to stop the invoices from coming in, and the best way to do that is to stop ordering books and DVDs for about six weeks. Our book budget will be smaller next year, but we still hope to be able to purchase many of the titles you are waiting for as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience.

Lost Bookmark

A Cameron Park patron left two pieces of white rice paper (each 5 inches x 7 inches). There is a small red bamboo imprint on left bottom corner with chinese writing in black ink. One says "T'ai Chi", the other says "Jamie Willsun". These are of sentimental value to our patron and she hopes they will be returned. Please call Cameron Park Branch Library if found. Bookmobile News

As many of you know, our bookmobile service was eliminated in one of the first rounds of budget cuts that the county is facing. However, we received some fantastic news last month. Bill Parker, developer of Serrano in El Dorado Hills and a great library supporter, offered a challenge to the community to get the Bookmobile on the road again. His donation of $10,000 per year for three years will allow us to restore one day a week service – but there is a catch. We must match his offer and raise an additional $10,000 each year. Our Friends of the Library groups are hardworking and generous people who will try to meet the challenge. If you can help, please send donations to the El Dorado County Library Bookmobile Fund, 345 Fair Lane, Placerville, CA 95667. We are going to try to get back on the road as soon as we can.

Lost in Translation

I was fortunate to be able to travel to France recently. Although my book browsing consisted of looking in shop windows of all the “Librairies”, or bookstores, I was rather surprised to see very few familiar American authors. Given the prevalence of American pop music playing in the background in French stores and cafes, the lack of American books in translation seemed a little odd. Also, the French authors and books were completely new to me. Do the French and the Americans like different kinds of books? Are works of literature too expensive to translate? Exceptions to this very unscientific look at the French book market are the Harry Potter books in most stories, and one elegantly dressed woman spied on the Metro with a French copy of a Nora Roberts novel.

Noise in the Library

A recent letter to the Mountain Democrat complained that our Cameron Park Library was too noisy. Those “tight-lipped” librarians in Cameron Park that she refers to are actually biting their tongues so they don’t laugh out loud. The letter writer seems to assume that children don’t belong in the library during storytime, or perhaps ever, unless they can learn to behave like the well-brought up generations of yore. But should a busy suburban community library resemble the hallowed closed stacks of the Bodleian Library? Or should it be filled with crowds of young children and their parents enthusiastically sharing stories, songs and rhymes. Using your “library voice” is appropriate most of the time, but once in a while a library voice is exuberantly discovering the joy of reading and books. And that makes us smile.

Adult Book Club

The El Dorado Hills branch has a brand new program that we are excited about offering to adult patrons: the Second Wednesday Book Club. The group meets every second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you enjoy books and stimulating conversation, then this book club is for you!
We will be discussing The Glass Castle on April 9th and The Pillars of the Earth on May 14th. We always welcome suggestions for future book club selections and look forward to meeting you at our next get-together.

"Privilege has expired" message

Every two years library cards expire. Library staff then verifies your address and telephone number and extends your card for another two years. If you receive the message "privilege has expired" when attempting to place an item on hold please call or visit the library to have your account updated.

AudioBooks

After years of resistance to audiobooks, I suddenly find myself converted to a complete fan of the spoken word. The realization hit me the other evening when I was driving home from work – not only was I willing to postpone listening to All Things Considered, I was also raptly involved in listening to a part of “The Gravedigger’s Daughter” by Joyce Carol Oates that I had already read! I just didn’t consider it finished until I heard it being read aloud. I give the credit to my new appreciation to the county’s Public Health Director who enthusiastically recommends a new book on tape or CD every time I see her. I realize now how inattentively I was reading, and how my attention span has improved by forcing myself to listen carefully. Thanks, Gayle!! I’m always looking for new recommendations from everyone – please share.

I highly encourage everyone to try out the online book club feature on our website. Under the "reader's page" link, click on "Online Book Clubs" to sign up. I am signed up for the fiction book club, which is nationally run by Suzanne Beecher. Ms. Beecher sends book club members small sections of books via email each day. This is a wonderful, no-obligation way to explore new books that you may not otherwise try. If you like the book, you can come to the library and check out the book to read the entire title. If you do not like the book, simply wait until the following Monday when a new book is featured. Happy reading, everyone!
